Review: GTR: When The Heart Rules the Mind

By Dave Connolly

When The Heart Rules The Mind
Produced by Geoffrey Downes
Released on 1986
US CHART POSITION #14

Ah, when the chart rules the heart, this is what you get from two very talented guitarists. This single version of “When The Heart Rules The Mind” shaves about a minute from the elpee version; specifically, the end of the song featuring a reprise of the “Seasons will change…” section. That means the original classy ending, which employed a soft wash of sounds, is here replaced by a fade-out of the chorus. No one tampered with the flip side; it’s identical to the elpee version of “Reach Out (Never Say No).” Both tracks favor the fist-in-the-air arena rock sound (“which was the style at the time”), though the album had far more personality than these two songs would indicate. There was also a video made to support “When The Heart Rules The Mind,” featuring the band on a stage (that’s what you get for signing to Arista Records). Although the single isn’t deemed a collectible, this is the only place to find the single edit of the A side.
