Jon Anderson Update

June 24, 2002 -- To date, Jon has a couple dozen songs written with scratch lyrics in place; as the songs mature, the lyrics evolve into what the public finally hears. Jon has recorded all the songs on his Power Mac G4 utilizing Digidesign’s Pro Tools|HD 2, and he even has many of the backing vocals arranged and in place within the songs.

To say the music’s coming to life would be an understatement. It really sounds fantastic, even at this still early stage of the project. Jon has decided to rename the project from “Songs from the Spirit Game” to “The Big If.” His reasons are more personal than anything: “Actually, ‘The Big If’ is a title of one of the new songs. It’s a song about how I wish I could change the unpleasant things in this world. Given my intent with this project, “The Big If” seemed like the right title.”

Apart from the title, the project itself has evolved dramatically in Jon’s mind. Instead of creating and releasing a single album, and then moving on to something different, Jon wants this body of work to be the beginning of a project that could last for years, with each new release of music equating to a chapter of a book, the songs all telling stories from his life. As Jon points out, “If I do it right, this project will just continue, and it’ll be the next ten years or so of my life.” The task Jon faces with such a monumental undertaking is the order in which he tells and presents his stories. “In my head I can see and understand everything about this project and how the stories should be told, but to put it all down in the proper order is a challenge. Like anything creative, it’s going to happen, but it’s got to start in the mind’s eye — you dream it into realization.”
