Yes - Union

By Robert Sandall

Following one of the most peculiar corporate-merger cum hatchet-burial initiatives in rock history, Yes have reformed. Or something. Until last year, the Chris Squire faction had the name, Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe had the numbers. Now nine of the11 players ever to wear a Yes shirt are back on the same side. Since the new band has two of nearly everything, job sharing is inevitable for anybody who isn't vocalist Anderson. As a result Union veers alarmingly between Topographical Oceanics -- the neurotically jumpy overarrangements and competing time signatures favoured by the Howe/Bruford crew -- and the heads-down riffing of Rabin and Squire. Amazingly, a few strong, anthemic tunes like Lift Me Up emerge unscathed from this collision and so make Union one of the the least ridiculous Yes albums in recent memory.
