Jon Anderson interview: Atlanta Z-93

By Liz West

Transcription by Marek Jedlinski

----------
This is an Atlanta Z-93 interview with Jon Anderson, taken in mid-April 1997. Here is my transcription of the interview.

My comments are italicised, in square brackets. Two or three little places I can't really hear what Jon is saying - the joys of not being a native speaker (could someone fill in the blanks please?). And hey, I hope this is not infringing on anyone's copyright and if it is, be advised that I was nowhere near my computer when this got posted, it was my dog did it, so there :) -- Marek Jedlinski

["And You And I" fades out...]

Liz West: Atlanta Z93, and a classic from Yes, off Close to the Edge, that's "And You And I", I'm Liz West. As you know, very disappointing that Yes had to cancel their summer tour. Evidently there were problems with, uh, Rick Wakeman. And I have Jon Anderson of Yes, I have his phone number here, he lives in Maui now, I feel a little weird about calling him up because, you know, he just got married, like, I don't know, a week ago or something, just-just within the last couple of weeks he just got married so, I hope I'm not gonna interrupt him but I-I think we need to give him a call, hang on there... [punches the number] Okay, I'm gonna put this on the speakerphone. Ten bucks says he doesn't talk about Wakeman. Okay, here we go.

Jon Anderson: Hello?

LW: Yes, hi, Jon Anderson, please?

JA: Speaking.

LW: Hi Jon, this is Liz West from Z93 in Atlanta.

JA: How are you doing.

LW: I'm fine... Is this the bad time?

JA: Nooo.

LW: Great, congratulations!

JA: Thank you...

LW: Five days, four days?

JA: No, it's... ten days.

LW: Ten days! What do you do, aah, for a honeymoon when you live in paradise?

JA: I know. [something] travel around [something about France?] we dream of
doing it, so we're gonna do it.

LW: Right, well, congratulations. What's your bride's name?

JA: Jane.

LW: Tell her the best from all of us here.

JA Thank you so much.

LW: You're very welcome. So what happened, Jon? [whiney voice]

JA: I know, I was so... mmmmmmm, so broke up [sic!] about not touring, 'coz we were ready to go and then the album didn't come together properly so, about a month ago I thought, maybe we shouldn't be doing the tour, and everybody's just got, so unorganized, management is... we're changing management, which is kinda cool.

LW: Oh really, who're you [something]?

JA: [something] A guy called Alan Kovac (sp?), he did a Moody Blues and a couple other bands, we come from similar times, so he understands the highs and lows of the band and why we still wanna keep making music, we love music you know.

LW: Well, you're musicians' musicians, I mean--

JA: I know...

LW: And uh... oddly enough, the only time I've... and I've been a Yes fan -- my God, I don't even wanna say how long, it's been a very very long time, and sadly I've only ever seen you in one incarnation as ABWH, I never did see Yes! So--

JA: Yeah... well next time...

LW: Absolutely. We're, you know, we're a little disappointed, but we understand you're gonna try to resurrect the tour for the fall?

JA: We're trying to do it October-November-December now, and we will get organized, because you know, the fans deserve a good show, we want to make a good show, we wanna keep it going for a couple more years.

LW: How big is the production now, what are you doing?

JA: Oh we've just decided that we should go down to a very beautiful, simple stage theater, and then next year, if we get a chance and the albums do well and the music does well enough, then we'll jump up to the stadium, because we love doing big shows of course. 'Coz it's very hypnotic, you know.

LW: Oh, yeah, the music's very hypnotic. I thank you very much for taking the time Jon, and the best of luck to you and your new bride.

JA: Thank you so much.

LW: Congratulations, and we look forward to seeing you here in Atlanta in the fall!

JA: I hope so, thank you so much.
