Review: Conspiracy

By Dave Connolly

Conspiracy
Produced by Billy Sherwood & Chris Squire
Released on March 21, 2000

Conspiracy suggests a streamlined, poppier version of Yes -- which is of course where Sherwood and Squire are best known from (although the pair has also worked together in World Trade). In fact, a trio of "hidden" tracks at the end offer alternative versions of songs from those bands. However, this music is closer to punchy pop than progressive rock, favoring the Trevor Rabin side of the Yes contingent. While "Violet Purple Rose" would have sounded at home on Drama, and several tracks invite comparison to Big Generator, some of the best songs have a simple, Beatlesque charm about them ("Light In My Life," "Love Conquers All") that may well catch Yes fans off guard. Considering the album received almost no commercial fanfare, Conspiracy is one secret that more Yes fans should know about, especially those who would rather hear an album of songs than instrumentals. And, yes, "The More We Live" is a new version of the song that originally appeared on Union.
