YES

Magnification

Review by Olov Andersson

About a year ago I heard the rumours that Yes will not look for a new keyboard player and instead start working on new material, involving a full symphony orchestra. This completely blew my mind. But it also brings up questions….

Question No.1: What would that sound like? Today I have the new CD in my hand and I can assure you that it's nothing less than a masterpiece. Instead of using the orchestra as a keyboard substitute that sounds like it has been added to the songs afterwards, they have used the resource from day one and worked it into all the arrangements. Many of these new compositions are among the finest Yes-pieces to date, and this CD will definitely have a long life.

Question No.2: Does it work without keyboards? Yes, it does. I do not feel like something is missing here and still the pieces have that typical Yes aura. The album is not completely keyboard-free. There are some piano passages played by Alan White. It is fascinating that a band that has been around for over 30 years still is so full of inspiration and that still has the ability to create new, fresh and intriguing music. The best album release of 2001 is already here.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED PLUS!!!
