'Yes' Brings Its Quarter-Century of Rock to SF

By John T. Huddy

Before there were the progressive and hammering rhythms of such respected rock 'n' roll acts as Primus, Oysterhead, even King Crimson, there was Yes.

Formed in 1968 in Britain, Yes, pegged as perhaps one of the greatest progressive rock and roll bands ever, is bringing its more than a quarter-century of rock and roll history and influence to Santa Fe.

The band has been so influential that if you were to randomly stop a couple of people on the street, be they hard-rocker, hip-hopper, classical music lover or otherwise, and sing a Yes song to them — maybe "I've Seen All Good People" or "Owner of a Lonely Heart" — they'd be bound to recognize it.

Wrapping up their North American tour, Yes is scheduled to play Paolo Soleri on Tuesday.

Sure, the band — vocalist Jon Anderson, bassist Chris Squire, guitarist Steve Howe, drummer Alan White (who incidentally played with John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band and George Harrison on "All Things Must Pass") and keyboardist Rick Wakeman — have aged with the years.

But don't call them washed up. Yes, a group that has sold more than 30 million albums, continues to represent some of the best songwriting, musicianship and artistic creativity in popular music.

The band has recently released a retrospective CD, "In A Word: Yes (1969-)," featuring more than three decades of music.

Aside from such rock hits as "Roundabout" and "Long Distance Runaround," Yes is also known for its multipart ballads, such as "And You and I," a love song that fuses together acoustic guitars, synthesizers and rock.

So, if you're in the mood to watch an ensemble of musicians sure to have its name etched in the Rock and Roll Half of Fame, catch the Yes show Tuesday.
