Coming Soon: Yes
By Michael Dwyer
Dexterous kings of progressive rock tour classic '70s line-up.
On one hand, the story of Yes is funnier than This Is Spinal Tap. They wore
capes, ate vegetables, played absurdly fast and wrote pretentious
four-sided concept albums such as Tales From Topographic Oceans. Then
again, in concert, the outrageous complexity and precision of their music
can wipe the smile off any face faster than it can say "Siberian Khatru".
Adroit UK musos Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman and
Bill Bruford pioneered the early '70s art-rock movement, later vilified by
punks as "prog rock". The band's complex history of enmities and reunions
has since filled several books but it's their classic line-up (John
Lennon's former drummer Alan White replaced Bruford early on) that tours
Australia in 2003.
The surprise return of synth wizard Wakeman signals a set list drawn mainly
from the band's trippy '70s heyday. If you're feeling more adventurous,
Rhino Records' box set, In a Word: Yes, compiles 55 tracks from '69 to last
year's Magnification.
