Keyboard Legend Rick Wakeman, Hopes UK TV Viewers will say YES to Easter Story
By Peter Wooding
Rock legend, Rick Wakeman hits the small screens in Britain this week,
asking people what Easter really means, in a BBC TV program called Jesus Who?
The show has already received excellent reviews in most of Britain’s
national newspapers, including the Daily Express which has placed it in its
“Must see” category with a four star rating, explaining, “Rick Wakeman,
veteran keyboard wizard, takes a look – and fortunately, quite an
entertaining one – at the significance of the Easter story in an age where
it seems mainly coated in chocolate.”
Speaking from his US tour with rock band YES, the card-carrying Baptist
Wakeman said: “I’ve seen the finished program and it is really excellent.
The director/producer (Jonathan Mayo), is a super guy and has done a great
job. I think it can be watched by all races, religions, creeds and atheists
even and they will all find it entertaining, but more importantly, thought
provoking.”
Another newspaper said: “Jesus' message was so radical that it got him, and
most of his supporters, killed. So, how come Christianity is now widely
seen as naff and Easter seems to be about chocolate eggs? Rock legend, and
Grumpy Old Man Rick Wakeman searches Britain for any surviving sparks from
that first century firebrand.”
In his autobiography “Say YES,” Wakeman recollects his own personal journey
of faith, from being a Boys Brigade leader, to rekindling his Christian
faith, when he felt God speak to him very clearly about the direction his
life should be taking, when he hit one of the lowest points of his life
while in Australia.
He also explains that his musical gift is God-given and should be used
wisely. Which he has sought to do many times during church benefit tours
for various good causes, including ASSIST Ministries, which aims to provide
assistance to Christians living in persecuted countries around the world.
The "Jesus Who?" program goes out on Tuesday at 11.05pm UK time on BBC1.
