Yes offers a night to remember.

By Habacuc Frías

Bringing back to life some people's nostalgic feelings and making the dream of watching them live for the first time come true for others, Yes played a sold out concert last Saturday on the "Teatro Metropólitan" theater on their second visit to Mexico.

An audience which mainly included people over their forties (and some even accompanied by their children) witnessed a true old fashioned Progressive Rock spectacle.

A stage covered primarily by various inflatable and extravagant figures (designed by Roger Dean) accompanied these five English musicians.

The show opened as usual with Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite" extracts, beginning a long journey through the band's extensive musical history.

It was clearly visible the sign of years gone by in the faces of the five people on stage, all of them proudly displaying their grey hairs and wrinkles. However, their musical abilities remain more than intact, just as they were twenty or thirty years ago.

As the night developed, the band played tunes such as "Going For The One", "Sweet Dreams" and "Your Move/I've Seen All Good People", firing up the audience that didn't hesitate in taking every opportunity they got to loudly cheer them.

Singer Jon Anderson had the chance to thank the attendance of more than three thousand people repeatedly in between songs, and dusted off a little bit his Spanish by saying "Muchas Gracias" ("Thank you very much").

Even though Jon showed that through the years the band wrote and performed hundreds of songs, having a huge and complicated repertoire, he still needed the assistance of an electronic screen to remind him of some of the more complicated lyrical passages of a few of the pieces.

After playing "Yours Is No Disgrace", the band announced a little break, having the need to "drink tea and whiskey".

A very rare and not often hear acoustic set followed the fifteen minute break.

Included within this set were classical songs such as "Long Distance Runaround" and "Wonderous Stories".

After this spectacular display of musicianship the band, once again armed with their electric instruments, played "Roundabout", "Show Me", "And You And I" and "Ritual", bringing the evening to an end.

The audience didn't move nor did they stop clapping and requesting more songs.

As the only encore, the band returned to the stage and played "Every Little Thing" and "Soon".

Lights on, band off the stage, people kept cheering and yelling and asking for more tunes. This time, their requests wouldn't be answered.
