YES The Ultimate Yes 35th Anniversary Edition (Rhino)

By Michael Cote

Once Yes couldn't get much respect. Even the prog-rockers acknowledge that spoof flick "Spinal Tap" steals some of its comic thunder from the band's pretentious on-stage antics. But time has been kind to singer Jon Anderson, bass player Chris Squire, guitarist Steve Howe, drummer Alan White and keyboard player Rick Wakeman, the classic lineup of Yes that is planning to tour behind The Ultimate Yes and record a new album later this year.

The three-disc set, which differs drastically from a previously released import version, collects the band's best-known works over two discs and adds a third one featuring five new recordings, including a jazz-tinged acoustic version of "Roundabout" that pumps new life into the overplayed hit.

Anyone who sprung for the five-disc revamped box set a couple of years back won't find anything new here except the bonus disc. But for new fans who might want to discover where Radiohead got some of its inspiration or old fans who want the highlights, this set does a decent job summing up the band's history. Four cuts come from the band's most famous disc, 1972's Fragile, and a trio comes from its 1983 mega-platinum comeback, 90125, when Squire and Anderson remained the only founding members and "Owner of a Lonely Heart" brought the group new fans.
