------------------------------------------------------- MARCH 25, 2004 ------------------------------------------------------- Source: Sea of Tranquility Reviews http://www.seaoftranquility.org/reviews.php/?op=showcontent&id=1267 Yes: Going for the One (remaster) By Pete Pardo Sporting wonderful sound clarity and a host of amazing photographs in the 18 page booklet, Yes' 1977 release Going for the One is just one of the many impressive Yes remasters in the recent Rhino series. However, after spinning this CD at least a half dozen times, I can't help but think that there is something extra special going on here. Let me explain... There's no doubt that Yes fans for the most part adore this album. I mean, for one, Rick Wakeman came back into the fold after the departure of Patrick Moraz, and once again the band began a new phase and seemed invigorated. The results were classic songs like the epic "Awaken", the majestic "Turn of the Century", the gorgeous and melodic "Wonderous Stories", the heavy prog rock of "Parallels", and the driving progressive rockabilly of the title track. This clearly was a band who were set to defy the punk movement, and had come up with some of their strongest material in years. "Awaken" still remains a concert favorite of the band and the fans to this day, and is one of the best epic length prog songs ever recorded. Rhino's remaster treatment gives this album a warmth that it never had before-listen to it on headphones and you will know what I mean. "Turn of the Century" sounds so lovely and tender, that it might bring tears to your eyes. I almost felt like I was really hearing this album for the first time, or like I was being reaquainted with a long lost and dear friend who I had not seen in many years. Time apart has made the heart grow fonder I guess, but the sound here is very special. Allan White's drums are crisp, Steve Howe's guitar parts bursting with energy on the rocking cuts, the acoustic work breathtaking. Going for the One is also a fantastic vehicle for the vocal stylings of Jon Anderson, and the singer soars above the mix on tunes like "Awaken" , "Turn of the Century" and "Wonderous Stories" like never before. You get a host of bonus material here, some previously available on the YesYears box set like "Montreux's Theme", "Vevey (Revisited)" , and "Amazing Grace", in addition to some rehearsal versions of songs from the album. It's kind of cool to hear these songs in their earlier incarnations as the band was still working them out. Song lyrics are included, as well as who played what on each album track, making for a great well rounded package, something you can really call a "special edition." Need any more reasons to re-purchase this album again?
