Yes' Steve Howe Hits Small Time

Yes guitarist Steve Howe played an intimate club gig on Long Island, New York on Saturday (May 24) at the Downtown to a jam packed audience. The guitarist’s set included some rarities and special songs from all phases of his career. Howe just played Madison Square Garden with Yes earlier this month, and he found it amusing that only a week later he’s playing a small club like The Downtown.

“You know, forget the theatrics, the dry ice, the smoke, the scenery. What you’ve got here is a chance that you have of greater communication and spontaneity that will happen in a conversation, the way you’ll exchange ideas as happened last night. There was a guy last night, that said, ‘The Ancient’. Now I was not going to play that. It’s a classical guitar piece, and I wasn’t playing classical guitar. But he said it, and I knew that maybe this was not going to go away. And then he said it again, ‘The Ancient’! Please play ‘The Ancient,’” and it stirred up that feeling, they all wanted it, so I thought, ‘Well I’ve got no choice now. I’m there. I’ve got to do it.’”

Howe added that he’s respectful of artists that perform in clubs.

“So I’ve got the utmost respect, and I’ve come full circle – even though we just did Madison Square Garden and big shows for a whole month here -- I’ve come to the conclusion that if a performer doesn’t stay in touch with clubs, he loses sight of what performing is.”

Steve Howe left the confines of Long Island to head an area just outside Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Howe’s appearance was part of the 20th Century Guitars show out on Long Island.
